Faulty Equipment Detected by Infrared at a Power Generation Plant, Potentially Saving the Company Millions!

We operate a power generation plant in northern Alberta on one of the oil sands plants site in Fort McMurray. We supply power for the whole plant as well as export power to the Alberta grid. We also produce steam, which is a vital part of the oil extraction process. What I had found was that there were three motor contactors that were extremely hot. They may have failed at any time. Of the three contactors, we generally have two running all the time so if we lost one, we would not have a spare or the ability to run the third one when needed. After the problem was found it took three weeks to get new parts. If we would have lost these units at the same time we would have had to reduce steam production by 40 percent. This would have impacted our customer output of oil, and at the price of oil now we would have been back-charged for lost production. If we hadn’t detected the problem with our infrared camera before a malfunction occurred, it could have added up to millions of dollars lost!
